Heirloom or Hybrid Seeds, Which is Better?
The answer is ‘depends’: if you want to save seeds and plant them year after year, heirlooms are best. Hybrids can give you plants with the traits you want, but saving seeds is much more unreliable. Heirlooms are wonderful in that they connect us to history and let us explore what previous generations of farmers and gardeners did, while hybrids are exciting and offer something new nearly every year. Which you prefer is up to you—it’s your garden and you get to grow it how you like!
Gravel in Plant Containers: Myth and Reality
We were taught to put gravel in the bottom of containers to help soil drain, but it doesn’t work very well. Adding gravel can potentially make things more difficult. As our fellow gardening educators at Parker County Master Gardener Association demonstrate in this beautiful illustration, adding a layer of gravel can keep water trapped in the soil near the roots of the plants, which causes the roots waterlogged and then root rot. So it’s best to avoid using gravel inside of flower pots.
How to Add Compost in Your Container Plants?
Following the formula you would for adding it to soil—2 inches or 5cm at planting time—gently use your fingers to top dress the compost by stirring it into the the soil in the container. Be careful and avoid disturbing the roots of existing plants, as this can damage them.
An Important Tip Giving Right Nutrition to Tomatoes:
Tomatoes need more calcium than some plants. Calcium helps prevent blossom-end rot, which as the name implies causes the end of the fruit with the flower on it to decay. When planting your tomatoes either in ground or in a container, some additional calcium in the form of a crushed-up eggshell is a good idea. It’ll help get your plants off to a good start and along with a good fertilizer keep them thriving all season long.
How Long Those Grow Bags Can Last?
Gardzen grow bags can last at least two years. They can be reused many growing seasons.
Do I Need To Cut Holes To Drain Water Out?
No, the permeable nature makes the bag can drain excess water out without needing to cut any special holes.
Can I bury the bags in the ground?
Yes, those grow bags can be buried in the ground. But our suggestion is that you you need to cut the bottom so the roots can stretch out deeply.
Why 5 Gallon Fabric Grow Bag Is Smaller Than 5 Gallon Bucket?
